Nicolás is a postdoctoral researcher at MPI CBS in Nico Scherf’s group. He develops geometric hyperscanning and leads its open-source toolkit, HyPhi. The approach treats two interacting brains as one time-varying network and characterises its reorganisation with discrete curvature and information geometry. Each connection between the two brains receives a curvature value that describes how robust or fragile it is.

With lab colleagues, he studies the information geometry of active inference and planning. In philosophy, he asks what inter-brain networks are and what they can explain, and examines hyperscanning in psychotherapy.

Community: SSNAP 2026 Fellow (Summer Seminars in Neuroscience and Philosophy, Duke); three SSNAP team awards, on the neuroscientific foundations of mechanistic interpretability, on the effects of outsourcing moral deliberation to LLMs and on The Ontology and Explanatory Status of Inter-Brain Networks, an international workshop and open-access volume he co-organises; Steering Committee member, Society for Philosophy and Neuroscience.
